6 'Plastic Free' packaging innovations.
We reported on the “Plastic Free” trend at the beginning of the year - and look how far we have come. The Blue Planet effect has engaged the population and it is almost a passion point and huge conversation starter. It comes to no surprise that businesses are beginning to put sustainability on the agenda. Research by Kantar shows that food packaging contributes to 81% of plastic waste and consumers are vocal about the responsibility being the retailer and producers.
With consumers changing their habits surrounding the plastic free movement, brands are trying to keep up. 8 in 10 consumers are now trying to reduce their plastic waste and half would pay more for eco-friendly packaging as research by The Guardian shows.
We’ve spotted some plastic free packaging innovations that could revolutionise todays world:
@choosewater are making water bottles from 100% recycled newspaper. They are also in partnership with Sky Ocean Venture aiming to solve the ocean plastic crisis.
@notpla make packaging solutions from a material made from seaweed and plants that disappears, naturally. The material is edible or it biodegrades in 4-6 weeks.
@beeourguestwraps a US based brand have launched an alternative to single-use plastic food wraps. Their wraps are made from locally sourced beeswax and cotton fabric.
@desintegra.me have developed a biodegradable alternative to single-use plastic by using raw materials extracted from algae. The dye used to colour the material is extracted from skins of fruit and vegetables.
@theshellworks transform waste lobster shells into biodegradable and functional plastic.
@carlsberg have released prototypes of it’s first paper bottle. The prototype is made from sustainably sourced wood fibres and are fully recyclable.
As the EU countries agree to conform to the Plastics Strategy, dictating that all plastic waste will be recyclable by 2030 it is vital for brands to get behind this initiative.
